Best Time of Day to Take Your Blood Pressure
The best time to take your blood pressure is twice a day: once in the morning before you eat, drink caffeine, or take medication, and once in the evening. Taking it at the same times each day, in the same way, is what makes your readings comparable and trustworthy.
Why timing matters
Blood pressure naturally rises and falls across the day — it’s usually lowest while you sleep and climbs in the hours after you wake. Because of this daily rhythm, a single random reading tells you very little. Measuring at consistent times turns scattered numbers into a pattern you (and your clinician) can actually act on.
A simple daily routine
- Morning: before coffee, food, or medication, after a few minutes of sitting quietly.
- Evening: before dinner or before bed, again after sitting calmly for five minutes.
- Take two readings a minute apart each time and record both.
Get an accurate reading
Sit with your back supported and feet flat on the floor. Rest your arm on a table at heart height. Don’t talk during the measurement, and avoid caffeine or exercise in the 30 minutes beforehand.
When to check with a doctor
If your readings are consistently high, or you ever see a very high reading (180/120 or above) — especially with chest pain, shortness of breath, or vision changes — seek medical care promptly. This article is educational and isn’t a substitute for advice from a qualified clinician.
